Viral Video of Assault at Gwalior Railway Station Sparks Investigation and Police Transfer

Mumbai, July 2: A video showing an assault on a young man at Gwalior Railway Station has gone viral, prompting the Government Railway Police (GRP) to initiate a departmental inquiry. Following allegations of negligence in handling the situation, a sub-inspector has been transferred to the police lines. This action comes after claims that the GRP failed to take immediate legal action against the individual detained for an alleged theft attempt, instead allowing him to leave.

According to railway police, the incident occurred on June 29 around 4 PM on platform number 2. A woman accused the young man of attempting to snatch her gold earring. As she raised an alarm, passengers apprehended him and assaulted him before security personnel intervened.

During the assault, the young man lifted a child in an attempt to protect himself from the crowd. A bystander recorded the incident, which has since gained significant attention on social media, highlighting both the mob violence and the subsequent police response. Authorities reported that personnel from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) rescued the individual from the mob and handed him over to the GRP for further action.

Questions have arisen regarding the handling of the case due to the lack of immediate legal action against the young man. In response to the viral video, the railway police headquarters ordered a preliminary investigation. Based on the findings, sub-inspector Chetan Koroliya has been sent to the police lines pending the completion of the departmental inquiry.

Railway Police Superintendent Rajesh Singh stated, “A departmental investigation has commenced. We are also identifying individuals involved in the assault based on the viral video. Legal action will be taken against anyone found guilty.”

This incident raises concerns about the GRP’s handling of alleged theft cases and the increasing tendency for crowds to take the law into their own hands in public spaces. The outcomes of the departmental inquiry will determine if any disciplinary or legal actions will follow.
