PM Modi and Japanese Counterpart Takaiichi to Attend Annual India-Japan Summit

New Delhi, July 2: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will engage in the 16th annual India-Japan summit-level talks with his Japanese counterpart, Sanae Takaiichi, on Thursday in New Delhi. The discussions will focus on reviewing and strengthening the entire spectrum of mutual cooperation. Both leaders will also exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.

Sanae Takaiichi will receive a formal welcome at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Thursday. She arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday evening, marking the beginning of her three-day official visit.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs welcomed the Japanese Prime Minister on social media platform X, stating, “We warmly welcome Prime Minister Sanae Takaiichi, who is visiting New Delhi on an official trip. She was received by MOS Dr. Jitendra Singh. This visit is a crucial step in advancing the strategic and global partnership between India and Japan.”

Earlier in the day, Keiichi Ono, Japan’s Ambassador to India, mentioned that Takaiichi’s visit would provide a significant opportunity to enhance dialogue between the two nations. He made this remark during the Japan session of the Human Resource Mobility Forum hosted by the Ministry of External Affairs.

The Japanese ambassador expressed his happiness on X, stating, “I was pleased to speak at the Japan session of the Human Resource Mobility Forum organized by the Ministry of External Affairs. Prime Minister Takaiichi’s visit will be a fantastic opportunity to advance dialogue between our peoples, which is the foundation for strengthening our deep and strategic relations.”

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the forum shed light on emerging pathways for cooperation between India and Japan.

The Ministry wrote on X, “Promoting skill-based mobility in India-Japan cooperation. The Human Resource Mobility Forum emphasized emerging pathways for collaboration in mobility between India and Japan.”

Before departing for India, Sanae Takaiichi highlighted the importance of Japan’s cooperation with India in the current international context.

On Wednesday, she stated to the media in Tokyo, “Through this visit, I hope to advance solid cooperation in three key areas with Prime Minister Modi: deepening the Japan-India strategic partnership in light of current international conditions; promoting cooperation in economic security; and strengthening collaboration between businesses in both countries in investment and innovation.”

She added, “During this visit, there will be a Japan-India Joint Economic Forum with representatives from over 150 Japanese companies and business organizations. By working together with the private sector, I hope to expand the scope of Japan-India cooperation and build a robust economy.”

PM Takaiichi emphasized that maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region is a shared responsibility of India and Japan. She expressed eagerness to discuss efforts to realize a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

She remarked, “India, along with Japan, is one of Asia’s leading democracies and shares the responsibility of maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. Against this backdrop, I look forward to comprehensive discussions with Prime Minister Modi on efforts to achieve a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP), which includes cooperation through the Quad framework. Lastly, as this visit is at the invitation of PM Modi, I also hope it will deepen our personal trust.”

During her visit, PM Takaiichi will also participate in a business forum. This marks her first official trip to India since taking office.
