New Delhi, May 30: Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat successfully passed the weight-in test for the women’s 53-kilogram category at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi on Saturday. She is now eligible to participate in the selection trials for the Asian Games in this weight category.
According to officials, Vinesh was among all eligible wrestlers who reported on time for the weight-in and completed the necessary formalities. After fulfilling this process, she is now set to compete in the upcoming selection trials.
The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) stated, “As per the schedule, weight-in was conducted for all weight categories, including the women’s 53-kilogram category, at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi. All eligible wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, reported for the weight-in and completed the required formalities. Consequently, all qualified wrestlers meeting the stipulated requirements have been cleared to participate in the selection trials.”
Previously, the Supreme Court refused to stay the Delhi High Court‘s order allowing Olympian Vinesh Phogat to participate in the Asian Games selection trials. Following this, the WFI insisted that she would only be allowed to compete in the 50-kilogram weight category, which she participated in two years ago in Paris. The WFI had approached the Supreme Court to challenge the stay on the Delhi High Court’s order.
Sources from the WFI indicated, “Vinesh Phogat must participate in the trials for the 50-kilogram category, the same weight class in which she competed at the Paris Olympics. As a renowned wrestler, she will be allowed to take part in the selection process, but only in the 50-kilogram category.”
Starting in the 48-kilogram weight category, Vinesh moved up to 51 kilograms and then to 53 kilograms, where she won two World Championship medals. However, she participated in both the 53 and 50-kilogram categories during the trials for the Paris Olympic Games before qualifying in the 50-kilogram category. She reached the finals in the 50-kilogram weight class at the 2024 Paris Olympics but narrowly missed the weight requirement on the morning of the final.
A member of the famous Phogat sisters from Haryana, the 31-year-old wrestler announced her retirement a day after her loss at the Paris Olympics. However, in December 2025, she reversed her retirement decision and expressed her focus on the 2028 LA Olympics. During her time away from the mat, Vinesh became a mother last July.
