Caracas, 3 January. Following late-night airstrikes by the United States in Caracas on Friday, the Venezuelan government issued an official statement on Saturday condemning the attacks. Caracas accused the US government, led by Donald Trump, of carrying out a severe military assault.
The Venezuelan government stated that the attack appeared to be an attempt to seize the country’s strategic resources, especially oil and minerals, and to undermine Venezuela’s political independence.
Residents of Caracas heard aircraft and explosions around 2 am on Friday night. According to local reports, the blasts spread panic across several parts of the city. At least seven powerful explosions shook Caracas, driving people onto the streets in fear. Following the attacks, President Maduro declared a national emergency and ordered the implementation of all national defence plans, granting authorities the power to suspend certain civil rights and increase the armed forces’ role.
The official government statement read, “Today, with the spirit of Bolívar, Miranda, and our liberators, the people of Venezuela have once again risen to defend their freedom against the attack. People, take to the streets.”
Venezuela described the US airstrikes as a violation of the United Nations Charter. The government declared, “They will not succeed. Even after more than two hundred years of independence, the people and their legitimate government remain firmly committed to protecting their sovereignty and the essential right to determine their own destiny.”
The sudden explosions caused widespread fear, prompting many to flee their homes amid confusion and uncertainty. Numerous videos circulating on social media show smoke rising from various locations in the capital, though these images have not been independently verified.
Power outages were reported in parts of Caracas following the blasts, including at military bases. Officials have yet to provide information on casualties or the extent of damage. Investigations and damage assessments are currently underway. Additionally, there have been reports of minor disruptions to telecommunication services.
