Varanasi, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : Varanasi’s mayor, Ashok Tiwari, has labeled recent flooding issues in the city as part of a deliberate conspiracy. His remarks came after videos showcasing waterlogging in various areas went viral on social media. Tiwari stated that an investigation revealed that sewer lines had been intentionally obstructed with bags filled with glass, sawdust, plywood, and sand, leading to the water accumulation.
“In the past week, there has been a social media campaign highlighting the waterlogging issues in Varanasi,” Tiwari explained. “Whenever it rains, water collects in certain areas. I want to responsibly state that videos of complaints have been circulating from places where water used to collect. Upon investigation, we found that the sewer lines were blocked with these materials. Just five days ago, we conducted a cleaning, and similar complaints arose from Durga Kund, where sand had also been used to block our sewer line. The same individuals are sharing these videos.”
He also mentioned a recent post by Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav on social media, which highlighted an overflowing sewer in the Shivala ward. Tiwari remarked, “I believe the number of people providing Akhilesh Yadav with accurate information about Varanasi is limited. The Shivala ward is located along the Ganges, and its water flows towards the Kunia STP before being pumped to Bhagwanpur.”
Tiwari further noted that after a recent rain, the water receded within half an hour, and he has photographic evidence showing the area completely cleared shortly thereafter. “When our water department staff cleaned the area the next morning, they discovered twelve bags filled with sand blocking the drain,” he added.
Expressing his concerns, Tiwari said, “I suspect this is a calculated conspiracy. In the wards where complaints and videos are emerging, we find bags and sawdust during our investigations. A complaint has been filed against unknown individuals regarding this matter.”
He assured that any individuals found guilty based on the complaints would face police action. “Engage in politics, express your dissent, and if there are shortcomings, voice your opposition. However, let’s also discuss development,” he urged.
Tiwari highlighted the government’s efforts, stating, “On April 28, the Prime Minister inaugurated a ₹2000 crore project for water and sewer systems in 22 wards. Such a project across 22 wards in Uttar Pradesh is unprecedented and was made possible through the Prime Minister’s initiatives and the Chief Minister‘s leadership, contributing to Kashi’s ongoing development.”
