Uttar Pradesh Launches One District, One Cuisine Initiative for Global Recognition of Traditional Flavors

Lucknow, May 4: The Yogi government of Uttar Pradesh has approved the ‘One District, One Cuisine’ (ODOP-Food) initiative following the success of the ‘One District, One Product’ (ODOP) scheme. Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Minister Rakesh Sachan announced this development on Monday, emphasizing that this initiative will provide new recognition to the state’s traditional dishes at both national and international levels, while also creating job opportunities.

Minister Rakesh Sachan stated that under this ambitious plan, each district’s unique and traditional dishes will be identified, preserved, standardized, and developed. The focus will be on improving the quality of these products, enhancing packaging, branding, and increasing shelf life to make them competitive in the global market.

He also mentioned that artisans, sweet makers, food entrepreneurs, and workers will receive technical training as part of the initiative. Additionally, markets will be made available to them through fairs, festivals, and exhibitions. This will not only enhance the recognition of traditional dishes but will also lead to job creation and increased income. To ensure effective implementation of the scheme, committees will be formed at the district level under the chairmanship of the District Magistrate, including representatives from universities, technical institutions, and the food and tourism departments.

These committees will ensure the selection and development of dishes based on local suggestions. The government has also made provisions for financial assistance for the scheme, offering entrepreneurs grants of up to 25% (maximum ₹20 lakh). A budget of ₹150 crore has been allocated for this initiative in the fiscal year 2026-27.

The minister further announced that a state-level conference for food vendors and sweet makers will soon be held in Lucknow, featuring technical sessions on packaging, quality, and modern marketing, along with an exhibition of traditional dishes. Additionally, the cabinet has decided to transfer land for spinning mills established in Amroha, Baheri (Bareilly), Sant Kabir Nagar, and Nagina (Bijnor) to the Textile Department to promote the textile sector. Textile parks will be developed in these locations, providing a boost to investment and employment.

Rakesh Sachan stated that the government is continuously working to strengthen ‘Brand UP.’ The ‘One District, One Cuisine’ initiative and the establishment of textile parks will not only give new recognition to the state’s traditional heritage but will also enhance industrial development.
