Washington, July 20: A US soldier has died while conducting a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance linked to an Iranian one-way attack drone in northern Iraq, according to US Central Command (CENTCOM).
In a statement released on social media platform X, CENTCOM reported that another US service member sustained minor injuries and is receiving treatment.
News agency Xinhua indicated that human remains were discovered by the US military on Sunday. Previously, CENTCOM had announced that two US soldiers died following an Iranian attack in Jordan on Friday, with one other soldier reported missing.
CENTCOM stated that an investigation is ongoing to confirm the identity of the recovered remains. They emphasized that details, including the identities of the deceased and missing soldiers, will not be made public until the official notification process for their families is complete.
In a recent update on X, CENTCOM noted that as of Sunday, the US military has continued its naval blockade against Iran, rerouting six commercial vessels and stopping one ship.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed to have shot down a US MQ-9 drone in the Ahvaz region on Sunday. Local media reported that the IRGC successfully destroyed the drone after intercepting it.
The Tasnim News Agency stated that the IRGC Aerospace Force’s advanced air-defense system, under the command of Iran’s Integrated Air Defense Network, was responsible for the drone’s downing. This announcement comes as Iran is retaliating against US military bases in the region.
The IRGC also claimed on Saturday that it attacked a US base in Jordan, targeted a fuel supply dock in Kuwait, and destroyed a data center in Bahrain.
