US Diplomatic Leak Sparks Controversy Over Sheikh Hasina Government Fall

New Delhi: A leaked diplomatic recording from the United States has stirred fresh controversy regarding the political upheaval in Bangladesh during 2024 and the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government. Following the leak, the Awami League has raised serious questions about America’s alleged role in these events.

At a recent event, former Bangladesh Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury stated that the audio recording validates the Awami League’s long-held view that the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government was not entirely an organic process.

In recent years, several countries including Bangladesh and Nepal have witnessed government changes. Similar attempts were reported in France but were unsuccessful. A common factor mentioned in these political shifts is the influence of the United States. It is often claimed that governments in these nations fell at America’s behest following episodes of intense violence or revolutions. However, no official evidence supports these allegations.

The newly leaked US diplomatic recording has placed Washington at the centre of fresh accusations concerning Bangladesh. A report published by a major daily, StratNews Global, refers to a conversation involving a senior US diplomat discussing connections with Islamic political forces in Bangladesh and speculating on the country’s direction following Sheikh Hasina’s tenure.

This revelation has intensified demands for an investigation into the US role in Bangladesh’s political landscape. It has also provided an opportunity for Awami League leaders to sharply criticise the subsequent Yunus government.

Sheikh Hasina was forced to flee Bangladesh on 5 August 2024 and has since been residing in Delhi. Chowdhury explained that the leaked audio reveals an ‘open conspiracy’ to manage post-election governments in Bangladesh, warning of severe consequences arising from such interference.

He strongly objected to attempts to prevent the Awami League from contesting elections, stating that excluding a major political force like the Awami League would disenfranchise a large section of voters and result in an illegitimate government lacking a popular mandate.
