Three Officials Record Statements in Cases Against Sheikh Hasina and 46 Others

Dhaka, August 11 (H.S.) — Three Bangladeshi officials on Monday recorded their statements in court in connection with three cases filed against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 46 others over alleged irregularities in the allocation of plots in the Rajuk Purbachal New Town project. The court later adjourned the hearings in all three cases until August 26.

According to the Dhaka Tribune, the statements of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Deputy Director Salahuddin, Assistant Director Afnan Jannat Keya, and SM Rashidul Hasan were recorded at Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-5, presided over by Judge Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun. On July 31, the court had framed charges in these cases and issued arrest warrants against the accused who are absconding.

In addition, Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-4 had framed charges on July 31 in three other related cases. Earlier, on July 20, Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib transferred the cases to the special court. On July 1, the court had summoned Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and 100 others, ordering the publication of a gazette notification.

The ACC registered six cases between January 12 and 14. The respective investigating officers submitted charge sheets on March 10.

  • On January 14, ACC Deputy Director Mohammad Salahuddin filed a case against Sheikh Hasina and seven others for allegedly abusing power to allot 10 katha plots in the Purbachal project. A charge sheet was later submitted against 12 accused.

  • ACC Assistant Director SM Rashidul Hasan filed another case on March 10 against Sheikh Hasina, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and 13 others, with a charge sheet naming 17 accused.

  • On January 13, Salahuddin filed another case against Sheikh Hasina, Sheikh Rehana, Rehana’s son Radwan Mujib Siddiq, and her daughters Tulip Siddiq and Azmiana Siddiq, among others, accusing them of misusing power to obtain plots from Rajuk. The charge sheet named 17 accused.

  • The ACC also filed a separate case that day against Sheikh Hasina, Tulip Siddiq, and Azmiana Siddiq, with charges later filed against 18 people.

  • On January 13, another case was lodged against Radwan Mujib Siddiq and 15 others, followed by a charge sheet naming 18 accused.

  • On January 12, ACC Assistant Director Afnan Jannat Keya filed a case against Sheikh Hasina and Saima Wazed Putul, with a charge sheet naming 18 accused.
