Dhaka, 18 November (Daily Kiran). Widespread unrest broke out across Bangladesh on Monday after the International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death for crimes against humanity linked to last year’s student uprising. Large-scale violence was reported in Dhaka, prompting authorities to deploy the army in several areas to restore order.

According to a late-night report by the Dhaka Tribune, protesters attempted to vandalise the historic residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the late father of Sheikh Hasina, in Dhanmondi 32. When police tried to stop them, the situation quickly turned violent. Soon after the verdict, dozens of Dhaka College students arrived with two bulldozers and announced through loudspeakers that they would demolish the remaining parts of Bangabandhu’s house. The army was immediately deployed, and security forces sealed all surrounding roads.

Police had to use batons and fire tear-gas shells to disperse the crowd attempting to break through barricades. A local police officer said that no one was allowed near Bangabandhu’s residence. The same house had been partially burnt by a mob after Hasina was removed from power last year. By Monday evening, nearly 300 protesters had again gathered at the site, burning tyres and clashing with security personnel, who struggled for hours to push them back.

Following the tribunal’s verdict pronounced at the premises of the Supreme Court, both celebrations and violence were witnessed across the country. Several parts of Dhaka and other cities reported sporadic arson and bomb blasts, leaving residents shaken. Dozens of vehicles were torched during the unrest. In the days leading up to the verdict, nearly 50 buses had already been set on fire at various locations, along with multiple bomb explosions.

At Dhaka University, students watching the live broadcast of the verdict on a large screen celebrated by distributing sweets.
