Unlocking the Benefits of Uddiyan Bandh: A Powerful Yoga Practice

New Delhi, March 16: Yoga has long been a potent method for balancing the mind and spirit. Among its many practices, Uddiyan Bandh stands out as an effective technique that offers numerous health benefits.

The term ‘Uddiyan’ derives from the Sanskrit word ‘Uddi,’ meaning to rise. This pranayama involves exhaling completely and drawing the empty abdomen inward and upward toward the spine. Regular practice enhances the functioning of abdominal organs, reduces belly and waist fat, and alleviates irritability, anger, and depression. It also aids in lowering diabetes and boosting immunity.

The Ministry of AYUSH has emphasized the importance of this practice and recommends daily engagement. They refer to it as the “lock of the abdomen.” According to the ministry, Uddiyan Bandh strengthens the digestive system, tones abdominal muscles, purifies the body from within, and elevates prana energy. It is also beneficial for reducing abdominal fat.

Uddiyan Bandh is not merely a physical exercise; it is an art of internal purification. It is one of the most effective yoga practices for strengthening the digestive system and toning the abdominal muscles.

The Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga has outlined a simple method for practicing Uddiyan Bandh. First, sit carefully in Padmasana, Vajrasana, or Sukhasana. Take a deep breath and exhale fully through the mouth and nose. Hold your breath and pull your abdomen in and up as much as possible.

Hold for 10-20 seconds, then gradually relax your abdomen and breathe normally. Return to a neutral position. Start with 3-5 repetitions and gradually increase.

Regular practice leads to positive changes in both body and mind. However, pregnant women, individuals with ulcers, heart disease, or high blood pressure should consult a yoga expert or doctor before starting this practice.
