UN Security Council to Focus on West Asia Issues in April

New Delhi, April 2: The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) will concentrate on conflicts in West Asia this April, according to Jamal Faris Alrowai, Bahrain’s permanent representative to the UN and the council’s president for the month. Key issues include Iran, Lebanon, Gaza, and the West Bank.

During a daily briefing on the UNSC’s April agenda, Alrowai stated that Bahrain’s membership is based on four main priorities: enhancing peace and stability, addressing traditional and emerging security threats, ensuring inclusion and participation, and promoting multilateralism.

These priorities will be integrated into the council’s work program and beyond.

Alrowai emphasized that the presidency’s focus this month will be to address the current regional and international environment, which includes matters related to Iran, Palestine, Lebanon, and more.

According to Xinhua News Agency, the UNSC condemned recent events that led to the deaths of three Indonesian peacekeepers from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) over the weekend.

In a press statement, council members reaffirmed their full support for UNIFIL and urged all parties to ensure the safety and security of its personnel and facilities, as well as the freedom of movement for the mission, in accordance with international law. They also called on parties to refrain from actions that could endanger peacekeepers.

Reminding that peacekeepers should never be targeted, they urged the UN to investigate these incidents through UNIFIL and keep the contributing countries informed of progress, in line with Security Council resolutions 2518 (2020) and 2589 (2021).

Additionally, they called on parties to fully implement Security Council resolution 1701 (2006) and reiterated their strong commitment to Lebanon’s sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and unity.

On Sunday and Monday, five other peacekeepers were injured. The statement noted that several recent incidents have impacted UNIFIL’s bases and resulted in injuries to peacekeepers amid ongoing clashes around the Blue Line.
