UN Secretary-General Calls for Global Unity to Eradicate Racism

New Delhi, March 22: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed deep concern over the rising tide of racism worldwide. He has urged nations to come together to combat this enduring evil, which persists in every society, country, and region today.

In his message on the occasion of International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, celebrated annually on March 21, Guterres highlighted that the roots of racism lie in the history of colonialism, slavery, and oppression. This historical context explains the ongoing economic, social, and political inequalities, discriminatory policies, and numerous conflicts observed around the globe.

He warned that in the current era, digital technology and online platforms are rapidly spreading hate. Social media and other channels propagate hateful language, misinformation, and misconceptions, which can sometimes escalate into real violence and abuse.

Guterres emphasized that the most effective solution lies in unity and decisive action. He called on all governments, organizations, businesses, and individuals to collaborate to ensure that every person receives respect, justice, equality, and human rights.

He also stated that all nations must fully implement international agreements aimed at eliminating racial discrimination and adhere to the principles of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action. This declaration, now 25 years old, outlines concrete steps to eradicate racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and related intolerance.

In conclusion, Guterres urged everyone to stand against racism daily. We must protect the dignity and rights of every individual and work to eradicate this evil at its roots.

The United Nations General Assembly established this day in 1966 to raise awareness against racial discrimination and encourage global action against it.
