UN Initiates Diplomatic Efforts Amid Iran War and Economic Instability Concerns

New Delhi, March 3: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has engaged in discussions with several leaders from the Gulf region. This dialogue comes as the UN expresses concern over the impact of the ongoing war with Iran on the global economy.

UN spokesperson Stephen Dujarric stated on Monday that military activities in the region could adversely affect the world economy. He emphasized that such situations disproportionately impact vulnerable and impoverished nations.

Instability in the Gulf region directly influences oil prices. On Monday, oil prices surged by 5.63%. If shipping through the Strait of Hormuz is halted, energy prices could rise even further.

Dujarric noted that Guterres is particularly worried about the potential spread of attacks to countries initially uninvolved in the conflict, including Gulf nations, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon.

He stressed the urgent need to find a path to de-escalate tensions in the region. Guterres has reiterated his call for an immediate cessation of hostilities, urging that conditions be prevented from worsening and that solutions be sought through constructive dialogue.

According to the spokesperson, Guterres has held talks with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Oman’s Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Al Busaidi, and ambassadors from the six-member Gulf Cooperation Council.

During his conversation with the Emir of Qatar, they discussed the current situation in the region and the necessity of returning to negotiations to swiftly end military tensions and restore stability.

Dujarric mentioned that during his discussion with Al Busaidi, Guterres expressed gratitude to Oman for its mediation efforts between Iran and the United States, while condemning attacks against Iran and Iranian assaults on Gulf countries.

The attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran occurred just two days after the last talks between Iran and Israel in Geneva, which were facilitated by Oman.
