UN Chief Expresses Outrage Over Murder of UNICEF Worker in Congo Drone Attack

New Delhi, March 12: The United Nations has expressed deep outrage over the murder of a UNICEF worker in a drone attack in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric reported that Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the attack that killed Karin Buisset, who was working in a building housing humanitarian aid personnel.

Dujarric stated, “Karin was a dedicated humanitarian who tirelessly supported children and families affected by conflict and crisis.” He noted that UN peacekeepers in Congo responded immediately to provide emergency assistance and assess the situation in Goma following the attack.

According to Dujarric, Buisset is the second humanitarian worker killed in the DRC this year. He cited data from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, which recorded at least 92 incidents affecting humanitarian workers across the country since January.

Dujarric emphasized that parties involved in the DRC conflict must ensure the safety of civilians and personnel providing life-saving assistance. He stated, “Humanitarian workers should never be targeted. This is international law. It is not up for debate or negotiation; it must be respected.”

He also called on all parties to cease hostilities immediately, respect the ceasefire, prioritize political solutions, and build on recent achievements in peace efforts.

French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed Buisset’s death in a post on social media platform X, urging respect for humanitarian law.

Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, is located on the northern shore of Lake Kivu. Reports indicate that the area has been under the control of rebel forces.
