ULFA (I) Militant Surrenders in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tirap District

Itanagar, March 3: A hardcore militant affiliated with the banned organization ULFA (I) surrendered to security forces in Tirap district, Arunachal Pradesh, on Tuesday. Officials confirmed the development.

According to a defense spokesperson, the Assam Rifles’ Khonsa Battalion conducted a special operation based on credible intelligence regarding the presence of an active ULFA (I) cadre in the Horu Chinghan area.

Upon reaching the suspected location, security forces activated local sources to establish contact with the militant and encouraged him to surrender. After sustained pressure from the ongoing operation and continuous dialogue, the militant agreed to abandon the path of violence and surrender. He was subsequently taken into custody at the Company Operating Base (COB) in Nogolo.

The surrendered militant has been identified as self-styled Second Lieutenant Bitul Barua, 31. He handed over a .40 caliber pistol, a magazine, and two live rounds of the same caliber to the security forces.

An official statement noted that this success highlights the effectiveness of intelligence-based operations and the humane and motivational approach adopted by the Assam Rifles’ Khonsa Battalion. The force remains committed to maintaining peace, security, and stability in the region and will continue to encourage misguided youth to return to the mainstream.

It is noteworthy that Khonsa serves as the headquarters of Tirap district. This small hill town is located in the Himalayan valley.

Additionally, the ULFA (I), led by 68-year-old Paresh Barua, has been involved in militant activities primarily in Assam for the past four decades.

Meanwhile, last month, security forces in Arunachal Pradesh thwarted a major conspiracy by arresting a militant from the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (Isaac-Muivah) during a joint operation in Longding district, recovering a significant cache of weapons and ammunition.
