UK Faces Heatwave as Temperatures Expected to Reach 35 Degrees

London, May 26: The UK is grappling with extreme heat this year, prompting the government to issue a nationwide heat-health alert (HHA) on Tuesday.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has announced an ‘Amber Alert’ for regions including the East Midlands, East England, London, West Midlands, South East, and South West. A ‘Yellow Alert’ has been issued for the North East, North West, and Yorkshire and Humber areas.

According to UKHSA, these alerts will remain in effect until 5 PM on Thursday, May 28. The Yellow Alert indicates a lower impact but poses a greater risk to vulnerable individuals.

The Amber Alert signifies medium impact, suggesting that the rising temperatures could significantly affect health and social care services. This may lead to increased mortality rates, particularly among those aged 65 and older or individuals with pre-existing health conditions. Younger age groups may also be affected.

As reported by the renowned daily, The Guardian, temperatures in large parts of southern England and Wales are expected to reach 35 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. A meteorologist from the UK Met Office indicated that by Wednesday, many areas in England and Wales could experience heatwave conditions, potentially lasting for five consecutive days.

Steve Kecher, the deputy chief forecaster at the Met Office, stated that temperature records for May and spring could be broken during the bank holiday weekend, with temperatures likely exceeding the current record of 32.8 degrees Celsius. Most parts of the country are expected to remain dry and sunny.

In the midst of this heat, fountains in city centers have become popular spots for people seeking relief, with children seen playing in the water. Long queues were also observed outside ice cream shops as locals and tourists sought ways to cool down.
