U.S. Trust in Pakistan Questioned by Former Pentagon Official

Washington, May 10: The relationship between the United States and Pakistan has undergone significant changes since the beginning of President Donald Trump’s second term. Recent developments have raised questions about the reliability of this partnership. Michael Rubin, a former Pentagon official and foreign policy analyst specializing in Iran, Turkey, and the Middle East, stated that Pakistan cannot be trusted.

Rubin, who has expertise in Iraq and Iran, made a sharp comment on the social media platform X. He noted that Pakistan has never been viewed as a steadfast ally in Washington’s diplomatic perspective; instead, it has been regarded as a country used solely for strategic needs. According to him, the current leadership is merely a part of this ongoing narrative. He further mentioned that as the Trump administration approaches its end, the next government—whether Republican or Democrat—will likely agree that Pakistan is not a trustworthy partner. Consequently, the U.S. may not feel compelled to honor any promises made to Munir.

During his first term, President Trump was critical of Pakistan. However, the U.S. stance towards Pakistan has shifted in his second term.

The tension in U.S.-Pakistan relations has been severe since the 9/11 attacks, with suspicions that Pakistan harbored Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind the attacks. Pakistan has consistently denied these allegations. In a covert operation on May 2, 2011, the U.S. killed bin Laden in Pakistan, further straining relations between the two countries.

Due to security concerns, no U.S. president or senior official has visited Pakistan in years. The last visit by a sitting U.S. president occurred in 2006, reflecting a lack of trust and a sense of insecurity regarding Pakistan. Since 2011, top U.S. officials have also refrained from visiting. However, in April 2026, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance visited Islamabad for negotiations amid ongoing conflicts with Iran.
