U.S. Senators Criticize Mojtaba Khameneis Appointment as Irans Supreme Leader

Washington, March 9: Following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, his son Mojtaba Khamenei has been appointed as Iran’s Supreme Leader. This decision has drawn significant criticism from U.S. senators, who argue that Mojtaba’s ascension does not represent the change they had hoped for in Iran.

Senator Lindsey Graham expressed his concerns, stating that choosing the son of the late Ali Khamenei is not the transformation the U.S. anticipated. The Republican senator from South Carolina took to social media platform X, asserting, “I believe it’s only a matter of time before he meets the same fate as his father.”

Graham has long advocated for military action against Iran. According to a report from The Wall Street Journal last week, he advised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on how to persuade Donald Trump to take action.

When asked about Mojtaba Khamenei’s appointment, President Donald Trump declined to comment at this time. However, in a brief telephone interview with The Times of Israel, he made a significant statement regarding halting attacks against Iran.

In response to a question about when attacks on Iran would cease, Trump indicated that he would collaborate with Israel to determine the timing for ending hostilities. Netanyahu will be part of this decision-making process, but the final call will rest with Washington.

Trump told Israeli media, “We are in discussions. I will make a decision at the right time, but all factors will be considered.” When asked if Israel could continue its military actions after the U.S. decides to halt attacks, Trump replied, “I don’t think that will be necessary.”

Former CIA Director David Petraeus described Mojtaba Khamenei’s appointment as unfortunate. He told U.S. media, “We believe he will be much like his father, who held very hardline views. I don’t think he is an Ayatollah unless he has been recently promoted. Decades ago, when his father was chosen, he was not very well-known either.”

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned on Wednesday that any leader chosen by Iran to “destroy Israel” would inevitably become a target for assassination, regardless of their name or where they hide.

Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana echoed this sentiment, stating that a change in leadership does not alter the nature of the government, and Israel will deal with the new leadership in the same manner.

This statement from Israeli officials makes it clear that Mojtaba Khamenei may face a fate similar to that of his father.
