Washington, May 20: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to embark on a four-day visit to India, arriving on Saturday. From May 23 to 26, he will tour various states in the country. The discussions will primarily focus on the Quad partnership, energy security, trade, and defense cooperation.
According to reports, Rubio will visit Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi during his trip. The U.S. State Department announced Rubio’s travel plans on Tuesday, noting that prior to arriving in India, he will first visit Helsingborg, Sweden, on May 22 to participate in a NATO foreign ministers’ meeting.
State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott stated, “During meetings with senior Indian officials, the Secretary will discuss issues such as energy security, trade, and defense cooperation.”
In addition to bilateral meetings with Indian leaders in New Delhi, Rubio is expected to attend the Quad foreign ministers’ meeting, which will include the foreign ministers of India, the U.S., Japan, and Australia.
In an interview, Mukesh Aghi, President of the U.S.-India Strategic Partnership Forum, emphasized that Rubio’s visit comes at a crucial time for both the region and the broader U.S.-India strategic partnership.
Aghi remarked, “It is time to reactivate the Quad, especially given the current challenges in the Middle East.”
He noted that discussions between the U.S. and India are likely to include maritime security concerns related to the Strait of Hormuz and broader regional stability. Aghi stated, “It is essential for there to be discussions between India and the U.S. regarding the Strait of Hormuz, as India possesses one of the largest navies in the region.”
Aghi also mentioned that India will seek clarity on recent diplomatic talks with China and their potential implications for the region. He added, “It is important for Secretary Rubio to inform the Indian government about the China visit, as it also impacts India.” He further stated, “India will want to understand how these developments will affect them.”
According to Aghi, this visit is occurring at an ‘opportune time,’ and it is expected that a range of issues affecting both countries will be discussed.
