U.S. Launches Project Freedom Military Mission in Hormuz Strait

Washington, May 5: The United States has initiated a military mission aimed at breaking the alleged blockade of commercial ships by Iran in the Hormuz Strait. This operation involves the deployment of warships and aircraft to ensure the safe passage of vessels through one of the world’s most critical oil routes.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that this campaign was launched under the orders of President Donald Trump and is named ‘Project Freedom.’ He stated that the mission’s goal is to “restore the free flow of trade in the Hormuz Strait.”

Hegseth described the operation as defensive, limited in scope, and temporary, emphasizing that its sole purpose is to protect innocent commercial vessels from Iranian aggression. He clarified that U.S. forces will not enter Iranian waters or airspace. “We do not seek conflict, but Iran cannot be allowed to obstruct innocent nations and their goods on international maritime routes,” he asserted.

He accused Tehran of harassing civilian ships, threatening sailors from various nations, and weaponizing a vital maritime route, which he characterized as a method of international pressure or extortion.

Hegseth noted that two U.S.-flagged commercial vessels have successfully passed through the Hormuz Strait under the protection of U.S. warships, demonstrating that the route remains open. He added that hundreds of ships worldwide are prepared to transit this passage.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Air Force General Dan Ken, stated that Iran has threatened and attacked commercial vessels multiple times over the past seven weeks, aiming to disrupt trade and harm the global economy.

He highlighted that the Strait handles nearly one-fifth of the world’s total oil consumption, making it crucial for global markets.

According to the Pentagon, over 1,550 commercial ships with more than 22,500 sailors are currently trapped in the region. General Ken reported that Iran has fired upon commercial vessels nine times since the ceasefire, seized two container ships, and launched more than ten attacks on U.S. forces, although these incidents have not escalated to full-scale war.

The U.S. has deployed over 15,000 troops, guided missile destroyers, helicopters, and more than 100 aircraft for this mission to create a secure maritime corridor.

Hegseth stated that the U.S. has established a protective shield over this waterway, akin to a “Red, White, and Blue” security cover, which safeguards ships around the clock. He warned that any attack would be met with a significant and devastating U.S. response.

He reiterated that the ceasefire is not yet over and urged Iran to avoid escalating tensions and to act wisely. He also called on U.S. allies to take responsibility, as the world relies on this maritime route more than ever.
