Assam Flood Relief: Government Announces Compensation and Immediate Aid for Affected Families

Guwahati, July 29: Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced increased financial assistance for families affected by devastating floods on Wednesday. This includes an additional compensation of ₹5 lakh for the closest relatives of each deceased individual and immediate relief of ₹15,000 for every flood-affected family in the hardest-hit districts.

Speaking to the media after assessing the flood situation, Chief Minister Sarma stated that no amount of financial aid can compensate for the loss of human life, but the state government stands with the affected families during this crisis.

Sarma expressed, “The grief of losing loved ones cannot be alleviated by any financial assistance. However, to support the families affected by the floods, an additional ₹5 lakh will be provided from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for each deceased person’s family.”

He clarified that this additional aid is separate from the existing ex-gratia amount of ₹4 lakh, bringing the total compensation for each deceased’s family to ₹9 lakh.

The Chief Minister also announced that every flood-affected family in the most severely impacted districts would receive ₹15,000 in immediate interim assistance to meet urgent needs arising from the disaster. This relief will be provided without discrimination to all eligible flood-affected families, including government employees, accredited social health activists (ASHA), mid-day meal workers, and other beneficiaries who are often excluded from some compensation schemes.

This announcement comes at a time when Assam is grappling with its worst floods of the season, affecting thousands of families across several districts and damaging homes, agricultural land, and public infrastructure.

The state government is working with district administrations to implement relief and rehabilitation measures, while rescue operations and distribution of essential supplies continue in the affected areas. It is hoped that this new package will provide immediate financial assistance to flood-affected families. The government is ramping up rehabilitation efforts across the state.
