Washington, March 9: U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated on Sunday that the United States has requested India to buy Russian oil cargoes currently waiting to be unloaded at Chinese refineries. This move aims to stabilize the global energy market amid ongoing tensions with Iran.
In an interview with CNN, Wright explained that the Trump administration reached out directly to India to alleviate rising concerns in the Middle Eastern oil markets.
“I called the Indians, just as U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Brison did, and said, ‘Look, there’s a lot of oil floating around waiting to be unloaded at Chinese refineries,'” he noted.
He further emphasized, “Instead of waiting six weeks, let’s expedite that oil, bring it to Indian refineries, and reduce fears of oil shortages and price surges.”
Wright clarified that the objective of this initiative is to quickly introduce additional crude oil into global markets and prevent further price increases due to the ongoing conflict with Iran.
He also mentioned that this is a practical, short-term effort and does not signify a change in U.S. policy towards Russia.
Wright reiterated that U.S. policy regarding Russia remains unchanged, although India has been granted a temporary exemption. He acknowledged that India has already taken steps to diversify its energy sources away from Russian crude and has increased oil imports from the U.S. and other countries.
