U.S. Claims to Have Eliminated Mastermind Behind Trump Assassination Plot

New York, March 4: The United States has announced the elimination of the mastermind behind the assassination plot against former President Donald Trump. U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated on Wednesday that they successfully tracked down and killed the leader of the unit responsible for the failed assassination attempts. A Pakistani individual is currently facing charges related to these plots.

During a press conference in Washington, Hegseth confirmed, “Yesterday, we took out the leader of the unit that attempted to assassinate President Trump.” However, he did not disclose the name of the leader from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Hegseth added, “President Trump has finally taken revenge.”

Asif Merchant, a Pakistani citizen, is facing trial in a federal court in Brooklyn, New York, which was scheduled long before the onset of the Iran conflict. Judge Eric Komitee, presiding over the case, remarked on the timing, saying, “This trial is occurring at an interesting time.”

Merchant has been charged with terrorism. He allegedly conspired with Iran to hire shooters to attack Trump during the 2024 presidential campaign.

Prosecutor Nina Gupta informed the court on Monday that Merchant used a clothing business as a front for the operation and intended to target individuals he deemed enemies of Pakistan and the Muslim world.

He was arrested while attempting to leave the U.S. in July 2024.

Unrelated to this alleged plot, a day after Merchant’s arrest, an American attempted to assassinate Trump during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. The shot narrowly missed, injuring only his ear.

The Biden administration had previously issued warnings regarding potential threats to Trump during the campaign.

Prosecutors stated that Merchant had discussed hiring shooters with a Pakistani contact, who turned out to be an informant for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

This individual introduced him to undercover agents posing as hired shooters. Merchant shared his plans with them and provided an advance payment of $5,000.

FBI agent Jacqueline Smith testified that Merchant admitted to receiving training from the IRGC.

Authorities reported that he communicated by hiding information in gift packages sent via Pakistan.

Another alleged plot against Trump emerged in 2024. In a separate case, prosecutors charged Afghan national Farhad Shakiri with conspiracy to commit murder, with charges filed in absentia as he was outside the U.S.

The IRGC vowed to avenge the assassination of its top leader, Qasem Soleimani, during a U.S. drone strike in 2020, which occurred during Trump’s first term.
