U.S. Approves $428 Million Apache Helicopter and Howitzer Support Deal for India

Washington, May 19: The United States has approved two potential foreign military sales to India, with an estimated total value of approximately $428.2 million.

These deals include follow-on support services for AH-64E Apache helicopters and maintenance assistance related to the M777A2 ultra-light howitzers. The U.S. Department of State provided this information in two separate notifications sent to Congress on May 18.

The larger deal pertains to long-term maintenance and support for the M777A2 ultra-light howitzer, estimated at $230 million.

According to the Department of State’s notification, “The U.S. Department of State has decided to approve potential foreign military sales to provide sustainment support for the M777A2 ultra-light howitzer to the Government of India.”

The U.S. noted that India has requested long-term technical and maintenance support for the M777A2 howitzers. This package includes additional equipment, spare parts, repair and return services, training, technical assistance, field service representatives, depot capacity, and other logistics and program support services.

BAE Systems will be the primary contractor for this package.

In a separate notification, the Department of State also approved a potential deal worth approximately $198.2 million related to Apache helicopters.

The statement read, “The U.S. Department of State has decided to approve the purchase of follow-on support services and associated equipment for Apache helicopters for the Government of India.”

India has requested maintenance support for AH-64E Apache helicopters, along with engineering, technical, and logistical assistance services from the U.S. government and companies, technical documentation, training, and other related support services.

Boeing and Lockheed Martin will be the main contractors for this Apache package.

Both notifications indicated that these sales would help strengthen the U.S. strategic objectives in the Indo-Pacific region.

The Department of State stated in both announcements, “This proposed sale will support U.S. foreign policy and national security goals. It will enhance the strategic relationship between the U.S. and India and improve the defense capabilities of a key defense partner like India, which plays a crucial role in political stability, peace, and economic progress in the Indo-Pacific and South Asia.”

The U.S. emphasized that these deals would enhance India’s ability to address current and future challenges, strengthen its security, and help deter regional threats.

According to the Department of State, these sales will not significantly impact the military balance in the region and will not adversely affect U.S. defense readiness.

These approvals come at a time when defense cooperation between India and the U.S. has been steadily increasing. Over the past decade, both countries have strengthened their military ties through arms purchases, joint military exercises, and technology sharing.
