New York, 26 August (Kiran News). Two-time Wimbledon champion and former World No. 2 Petra Kvitova from the Czech Republic has announced her retirement from professional tennis following a first-round defeat at the US Open 2025.

On Monday, at Flushing Meadows, Kvitova lost 6-1, 6-0 to France’s Diane Parry in the opening round. After the match, the 35-year-old left-handed player became emotional during the press conference and bid farewell to her tennis career.

On court, tears welled up in Kvitova’s eyes as she hugged her husband and coach, Jiri Vanek. The couple became parents to a son, Petr, last July, after which Kvitova returned to the court this year following a 17-month break.

Kvitova had already announced earlier this year that she would retire from tennis after the US Open.

During her remarkable career, Kvitova won the Wimbledon title in 2011 and 2014. She was also the runner-up at the Australian Open in 2019 and reached World No. 2 in the rankings.

In December 2016, Kvitova’s career faced a crisis when an intruder attacked her with a knife at her home. She had to undergo surgery on her left wrist and fingers. Nevertheless, she made a strong comeback, returning to the court at the French Open just six months later and winning her very first match.

Reflecting on her career, Kvitova said, “I am proud of many things, especially my mental strength. Remaining in the top-10 despite injuries and illnesses is a special achievement for me.”
