Two Arrested for Rape Under the Guise of Job Offer in Shantipur

Kolkata, July 22: Police have arrested two individuals in connection with the alleged rape of a divorced woman under the pretense of offering her a job. This incident occurred in Shantipur, Nadia district.

The accused reportedly threatened the woman, warning her that if she disclosed the incident, they would circulate her objectionable photos and videos. They also issued death threats against her. Following her complaint, police apprehended both suspects within 12 hours.

The victim, a resident of Shantipur, had recently contacted Shekhar Biswas, a local resident of Babla-Gobindpur South Kayasthapara, in search of employment. It is alleged that Shekhar introduced her to Manik Debnath, the owner of a local wardrobe factory, under the guise of providing her a job.

Subsequently, Shekhar lured the woman to various locations, including a hotel, where he allegedly raped her multiple times. He began to blackmail her by showing intimate photos and videos of their encounters.

Shekhar was not acting alone; Manik is also accused of raping the woman in a similar manner. He recorded videos and took pictures, threatening to share them on social media if she spoke out. He also threatened her life, which instilled fear in the victim, causing her to remain silent for an extended period.

On Monday, the victim decided to overcome her fear and approached the Shantipur police station. Based on her complaint, the police initiated an investigation and arrested both suspects within just 12 hours. They are scheduled to be presented in court on Wednesday. The victim has demanded severe punishment for the accused.

A senior officer from the Nadia district police stated, “Two individuals have been arrested based on the woman’s complaint. A case has been registered against them under relevant sections of the law. They will be presented in court tomorrow. The police will seek custody for further questioning.”
