TVK Government Reaffirms Commitment to Tamil Nadus Bilingual Policy

Chennai, May 19: The newly formed Tamilaga Vetria Kazhagam (TVK) government, led by Chief Minister Vijay, has reiterated its commitment to Tamil Nadu’s longstanding bilingual policy. Education Minister Rajmohan announced that there will be no changes to this framework under the current administration.

Speaking to reporters after his first review meeting with senior officials from the School Education Department, Rajmohan confirmed that the bilingual system of Tamil and English will continue in schools across the state. He emphasized that this policy is essential for both Tamil Nadu and the TVK government.

Rajmohan stated, “English is sufficient, and the TVK will not endure any additional pressure. There will be no compromise on the party’s principles.” He highlighted that Tamil will remain the primary language for communication within the state, while English will serve as a medium for global connectivity.

“The bilingual policy is a declared ideal of the TVK,” he added. This statement comes in the wake of the central government’s announcement to implement a three-language formula through initiatives like the PM Schools for Rising India (PM Shri) program.

When asked if Tamil Nadu would participate in the PM Shri scheme as it currently stands, the minister indicated that the state would first assess whether the program’s conditions align with Tamil Nadu’s educational goals and priorities.

He further noted that a final decision on joining centrally sponsored programs would be made only after evaluation. Rajmohan expressed concern over the lack of funding for the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) over the past two years, describing it as a significant setback for students and the education department. He clarified that this funding is intended for students, not for officials.

The minister reiterated, “We will not bend to any additional pressure.” He stressed that the new TVK administration will not undermine Tamil Nadu’s long-standing stance on language in education.

According to him, the bilingual framework is not merely an administrative arrangement; it reflects the state’s strong commitment to protecting Tamil while teaching students English for opportunities both within and outside the state. Citing Singapore, he mentioned that its founding Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, transformed a struggling nation into a global leader by using English to connect with the world instead of Mandarin or another language.

He described the government’s policy as a matter of cultural concern and genuine empowerment for students. The minister also stated that women’s rights and land rights are core tenets of the TVK government.
