New Delhi, June 21: The central government has approved the reappointment of Tushar Mehta as India’s Solicitor General for an additional three years. This appointment will take effect from July 1, 2026.
According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has endorsed Mehta’s continuation in this role, which is the second-highest legal position in the country.
The order states that the ACC has granted approval for Tushar Mehta to serve as Solicitor General for another three years, effective from July 1, 2026, or until further orders, whichever comes first.
Mehta was appointed as Solicitor General in October 2018 after serving as Additional Solicitor General. The government later reappointed him for a three-year term starting July 1, 2020, and again in 2023.
With this latest extension, Mehta will have served nearly eight years as Solicitor General, and by the end of his new term, he will have completed 11 years in this position, making him one of the longest-serving legal officers in the country’s history.
As Solicitor General, Mehta has represented the central government in numerous significant constitutional, policy, and criminal cases before the Supreme Court and various High Courts.
The ACC has also approved the reappointment of five additional Solicitors General (ASGs) for another three-year term. Vikramjeet Banerjee and K.M. Nataraj will be reappointed from July 1, 2026, while S.V. Raju, N. Venkataraman, and Aishwarya Bhati will be reappointed from June 30, 2026.
