Trump Warns of US Action to Secure Greenland Amid Rising Rivalry

Washington: US President Donald Trump has issued a strong warning regarding Greenland, stating that the United States will take necessary steps to secure the territory if required. He expressed concern over the increasing presence of China and Russia in the region, which he described as a significant threat to American national security.

In a conversation with reporters, Trump emphasised the strategic importance of Greenland’s geographical location for US security. He criticised existing military agreements as insufficient and pledged that America will take action on Greenland whether other parties agree or not.

US Prepared to Act if Negotiations Fail

Trump said, “We are going to do something about Greenland. They may like it or not. America prefers to resolve this through talks, but if that does not work, other options are open. I want an easy agreement, but if the easy way does not work, we will have to take the difficult path.”

He added that ownership is crucial for proper defence, pointing out that leased territories do not ensure adequate security. “When you own a place, you defend it properly. If America does not act, Russia and China will establish their foothold there,” he warned.

Concerns Over Russian and Chinese Military Activity

Trump accused Russia and China of already showing military activity around Greenland. “If you look around Greenland now, there are Russian warships, Chinese warships, and Russian submarines everywhere. We will not allow Russia or China to become neighbours in Greenland,” he stated.

Responding to Denmark’s claim over Greenland, Trump argued that historical arrival does not grant current ownership rights. “Just because a boat landed there hundreds of years ago, it does not mean they still own it today,” he said.

Despite his firm stance, Trump acknowledged Denmark as a respected ally but affirmed that US interests come first. He also linked the issue to NATO, claiming that the alliance’s strength is largely due to the United States and that he played a key role in preserving NATO.

Greenland’s Growing Strategic Importance

Greenland is an autonomous territory under Denmark. Due to climate change, new sea routes are opening, making military access easier. This has intensified competition among major world powers for influence over the region.

Trump concluded by stating the US will not compromise on security issues. “I like China, I like Russia, but I do not want them as neighbours in Greenland,” he said firmly.
