Washington, May 22: President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a strong statement regarding Iran, emphasizing the importance of resolving issues through both warnings and dialogue. They made it clear that Tehran must not be allowed to possess nuclear weapons.
This statement comes at a time of escalating tensions in the Gulf region, with concerns about oil supply in the Strait of Hormuz and ongoing discussions about Iran’s nuclear program.
Before departing for India, Rubio spoke to reporters at Miami Homestead Airport, warning Iran that any attempt to impose tolls or fees on vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz would be unacceptable. “We have always stated that a toll system in the Strait is completely unacceptable,” he said.
Rubio noted that the U.S. supports a United Nations Security Council resolution sponsored by Bahrain that opposes such measures. He highlighted that their proposal has garnered the most co-sponsors in the history of the Security Council, with support from over a hundred countries.
“No one in the world supports a toll system. It cannot happen; it is absolutely unacceptable,” Rubio stated. He warned that if Iran continues down this path, reaching a diplomatic agreement would become increasingly difficult.
Later, Trump asserted that the U.S. Navy maintains “full control” over the Strait of Hormuz, stating that no vessel can pass without American approval. He likened this control to a “steel wall.”
Trump claimed that Iran’s military capabilities have suffered significant damage. “We have destroyed their navy. We have eliminated their air force,” he said, adding that much of Iran’s missile capacity has also been diminished.
The president reiterated that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons remains a top foreign policy priority for his administration. He warned that if Iran succeeds, it could lead to a nuclear war in the Middle East, affecting the U.S. and Europe. While he mentioned that the U.S. is open to negotiations, he also kept the option of military action on the table if necessary.
“We will either ensure that they do not have nuclear weapons, or we will have to take very significant steps,” Trump stated.
Rubio indicated that discussions are ongoing, although he could not guarantee results. He emphasized that the president always prioritizes agreements and diplomacy.
During his remarks, Rubio also addressed India’s concerns regarding the rising tensions around the Strait of Hormuz and its impact on energy supplies. He stated that the U.S. is ready to sell as much energy as India needs.
He described India as a “great ally and partner,” noting that both countries are collaborating effectively in various sectors. Rubio mentioned that energy cooperation would be discussed during his visit to India, along with participation in Quad group meetings.
