Washington, June 18: President Donald Trump has hailed the Iran agreement as a historic diplomatic achievement. He asserted that this deal has averted a widespread war in the Middle East, reopened the Strait of Hormuz, and permanently prevented Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
In a lengthy press conference following the G7 summit in France, Trump repeatedly referred to the agreement as a significant success made possible through military strength and diplomatic coordination. “On Sunday, we reached an agreement with Iran that achieved everything we wanted,” he stated.
Trump emphasized that without this deal, the U.S. could have continued bombing for weeks, months, or even years. He claimed that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed, leading to ongoing instability in the Gulf and disruptions in the global energy market.
The U.S. President linked the agreement to falling oil prices and a booming stock market, noting that whenever the prospect of a deal strengthened, investors responded positively. “Every time we talked about the possibility of peace, the stock market shot up,” he remarked. He dismissed comments from conservative critics who believed military pressure should have been maintained on Iran.
He pointed to his decision to eliminate Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani in 2020 and recent attacks on Iranian military and nuclear facilities, asserting, “No one is more powerful than me.”
Trump stated that the agreement will prevent Iran from developing or acquiring nuclear weapons. Iran has agreed not to pursue nuclear arms, and he warned that if they do not comply with the deal, the U.S. might continue military action until they do.
He also mentioned that any economic relief for Iran would depend on its behavior. “If they do the right thing, if people want to invest, they can, but we are not putting money in,” he said.
Defending the agreement, Trump acknowledged that it is a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which is essential. According to an analysis published in The New York Times, this deal signifies a crucial shift from prolonged military confrontations to a framework ensuring compliance through deterrence and dialogue.
U.S. media reported that the Trump administration is betting on the notion that the mere threat of future military action will be sufficient to enforce the agreement, eliminating the need for a formal treaty framework.
The Washington Post described this agreement as one of the most significant foreign policy initiatives of Trump’s second term. The White House is optimistic about achieving diplomatic outcomes through military pressure.
The Wall Street Journal noted that the government’s argument for reopening the Strait of Hormuz and reducing threats to global oil supply could yield significant economic benefits beyond the Middle East. Trump stated that this deal could lay the groundwork for a larger regional agreement.
“As I told world leaders this week, I hope this peace agreement will mark the beginning of a very big deal across the Middle East,” he concluded.
