Washington, March 23: U.S. President Donald Trump asserted that positive and constructive dialogue with Iran is ongoing to reduce tensions in the Middle East. Following his remarks, numerous questions have arisen. Former official Joe Kent, who played a significant role in the Trump administration, has offered specific advice on the matter.
Kent, the former director of the Counterterrorism Department, referenced the “Israeli lobby” in his resignation. He highlighted this concern on social media, suggesting that to alleviate tensions, “restraint must first be applied to the Israelis,” or else a recurring pattern will ensue.
He elaborated on this pattern, stating, “The President of the United States speaks of reducing tensions. Then, Israel conducts major attacks to derail negotiations, which weakens our efforts. Consequently, conflict escalates.”
Kent resigned on March 17 in protest of the attacks, expressing his doubts about the justification for the ongoing conflict. He shared a letter on his social media platforms, labeling the airstrike on Iran as unnecessary and a result of Israeli pressure.
Describing his resignation as a decision made in line with his conscience, he wrote, “After much contemplation, I have decided to resign from my position as Director of the National Counterterrorism Center. I cannot support a war against Iran that goes against my principles.”
According to Kent, some senior Israeli officials and influential figures in U.S. media have orchestrated a campaign to spread misinformation, creating an environment conducive to initiating a war against Iran.
In his letter’s conclusion, he urged the President to abandon this course of action, stating, “Now is the time for bold steps. You can change your path and choose a new direction for our country, or you can allow us to slide further into chaos and decline. The choice is now in your hands.”
