Washington, June 4: President Donald Trump has stated that if a proposed agreement with Iran is signed, the Strait of Hormuz will be opened immediately. This statement is seen as a sign of progress in ongoing negotiations with Iran.
Trump made these remarks on Wednesday at the White House. He explained that his administration is working to establish a new agreement with Iran following recent military clashes and diplomatic discussions.
He stated, “Once the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is signed, the Strait of Hormuz will open, and it will happen very quickly.”
Trump noted that the U.S. military has already arranged for the removal of mines in the area, clearing most of the suspected mines.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most crucial energy routes, connecting the Persian Gulf to international maritime trade routes. A significant portion of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) passes through this route. Therefore, any disruption here raises concerns for many countries, including India.
Trump indicated that negotiations with Iran are progressing positively and that an agreement could be reached in the coming days. When asked about the timeline for the agreement, he replied, “If it happens, it could be by the end of this week.”
The president reiterated that the primary goal of these discussions is to ensure that Iran never develops nuclear weapons. He stated, “We will not have nuclear weapons or bombs. We will not develop them or purchase them.”
According to Trump, this is the main promise the U.S. seeks from Iran under this agreement. He emphasized that Iran will never be able to possess nuclear weapons under their deal.
In a significant statement, Trump mentioned that the U.S. and Iran could work together to remove and destroy any remaining nuclear-related materials at Iran’s nuclear sites.
Trump said, “The current situation is that we will be going there soon. It is already decided that we will go there together, retrieve that material, and destroy it. It will be completely eliminated.”
He claimed that B-2 bombers have conducted operations like never seen before, asserting that these strikes have severely damaged Iran’s nuclear infrastructure. He acknowledged that if any nuclear material remains, locating and accessing it will not be easy, but he still wants it removed and destroyed under any future agreement.
However, Trump admitted that tensions between the two countries remain high, but he insisted that recent events and retaliatory actions should not hinder the negotiation process.
The president also revealed a diplomatic contact he described as unprecedented, related to the Iran-backed Lebanese organization Hezbollah.
Trump stated, “We have spoken with Hezbollah for the first time. They agreed yesterday not to fire, and Israel will not fire either. Now we will see what happens next.”
He praised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as an excellent partner, stating that the joint actions of the U.S. and Israel have helped avert a major crisis in the region.
