Washington, May 29: U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Besant announced that the Trump administration has established three major conditions for any agreement with Iran. Tehran must surrender its highly enriched uranium, abandon any attempts to develop nuclear weapons, and ensure uninterrupted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
Despite repeated inquiries, Besant refused to confirm whether a temporary agreement had been reached. During a White House briefing, he stated, “Both teams are in continuous discussions. President Donald Trump made his position clear during a cabinet meeting just a day prior.”
Besant emphasized, “Iran must hand over its highly enriched uranium. They cannot attempt to create nuclear weapons. Traffic in the Strait of Hormuz must be uninterrupted. Maritime passage should remain open and free as it once was. He will not accept a bad deal. He will secure a great agreement for the American people.”
When pressed multiple times about a potential temporary agreement involving a 60-day ceasefire extension and ongoing nuclear talks, Besant declined to provide detailed information.
He remarked, “Everything depends on what the President wants to do. Trying to get ahead of the President is always a mistake.”
Besant argued that the administration’s strategy of military and economic pressure has successfully brought Iran back to the negotiating table.
He stated, “President Trump has accomplished what no other administration has. We have persuaded the Iranians to engage in discussions about their nuclear program and perhaps commit to not having a nuclear program. This has never happened before.”
He also indicated that any easing of sanctions would be tied to substantial concessions from Iran.
Besant noted, “No negotiations will be possible until the Strait of Hormuz is open and the Iranians accept that they must surrender their highly enriched uranium and abandon any nuclear program.”
He hinted that Washington is ready to continue talks but warned that the administration’s patience is not limitless. Referring to recent tensions and alleged ceasefire violations, he stated that the United States is focused on diplomacy.
Besant concluded, “President Trump always prioritizes peace agreements.” He cautioned that if diplomacy fails, military options may once again be considered.
The Treasury Secretary claimed that pressure on Tehran has disrupted the Iranian leadership’s decision-making process. He explained, “The Iranian government, as it stands, relies on three pillars: the elected government, the IRGC, and the clergy, and there are challenges in establishing communication among these three.”
