Washington, 19 August (Kiran News): The US State Department announced on Monday that President Donald Trump’s administration has cancelled more than 6,000 student visas. In most cases, visa holders were found to have violated the law or overstayed their permitted duration, while in about 200–300 cases, individuals were found involved in activities linked to terrorism.

According to a State Department official, approximately 4,000 visas were cancelled due to criminal offences, with the majority related to assault. Other reasons included driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and theft.

This move comes as the Trump administration has tightened regulations on student visas. Now, there is stricter scrutiny of social media, intense screening, and US embassies have been instructed to remain vigilant regarding politically active applicants.

The State Department clarified that the basis for cancelling visas linked to terrorism is outlined in the Foreign Ministry’s regulations, under which “involvement in terrorist activities” or “association with terrorist organisations” falls under visa ineligibility.

Meanwhile, President Trump has accused several top US universities of increasing anti-Semitism and supporting demonstrations for Palestinian rights. In a confrontation with Harvard University, he halted funding for research investigations and threatened to end tax exemptions.

Foreign Secretary Marco Rubio stated that not only students but also hundreds of thousands of others have had their visas cancelled, as they were found to be involved in activities contrary to US foreign policy priorities.

Several organisations and experts have criticised this action by the Trump administration, calling it an attack on freedom of expression under the First Amendment of the US Constitution.
