Trisha and Gayatri Settle for Bronze at BWF World Championship

New Delhi, August 22: In the 2026 BWF World Championship, the duo of Trisha Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand had to settle for a bronze medal. The Indian pair faced defeat in the women’s doubles semifinals against China’s Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning on Saturday.

The semifinal match lasted 71 minutes, with the Chinese pair defeating Trisha and Gayatri with scores of 18-21, 21-13, and 21-8, securing their place in the finals.

With this loss, Trisha and Gayatri missed the chance to become the first unseeded pair to reach the women’s doubles final. Their defeat also marked the end of India’s journey in the tournament, with the team finishing with only one bronze medal.

The match began with Trisha and Gayatri showcasing a strong performance, quickly taking a 7-2 lead. However, Liu and Tan made a comeback, scoring nine points to lead 11-7 at the break. The Indian duo fought back and managed to win the first game 21-18.

After losing the first game, the Chinese pair dominated the second game, quickly establishing a 3-0 lead. Although Trisha and Gayatri rallied to take a 9-8 lead at the break, the match was tied at 12-12 before the Chinese duo scored eight consecutive points to win the game 21-13.

The third game was one-sided, with the Chinese pair leveraging their experience to lead 11-5 at the break. They continued their momentum, scoring eight straight points to secure their spot in the finals.
