Agartala, August 10: Amid ongoing protests from opposition parties, including CPI(M) and Congress, the BJP-led Tripura government announced on Sunday that it will take steps to resolve consumer issues related to electricity bills.
Electricity Minister Ratan Lal Nath stated that the government is committed to addressing public grievances and will soon make decisions regarding the issues surrounding electricity bills. After presiding over a meeting at the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) office, Nath emphasized that the current state government is focused on problem-solving and will soon implement measures to tackle electricity bill concerns.
The meeting included TSECL’s Managing Director Biswajit Basu, senior officials, finance director, and other senior personnel, with Electricity Secretary Abhishek Singh participating virtually.
Nath instructed officials to investigate consumer complaints and resolve actual issues while maintaining good relations with consumers. He emphasized the importance of checking for problems and consulting with consumers to find solutions.
He also directed officials to act promptly on complaints and to visit affected areas as soon as possible to address issues. The minister mentioned that the government has already discussed several matters related to TSECL with Chief Minister Manik Saha, Finance Minister Pranjit Singha Roy, Chief Secretary Jitendra Kumar Sinha, Finance Secretary, and Electricity Secretary.
Nath clarified that the recent increases in fixed charges, fuel, and power purchase cost adjustment (FPPC) and energy charges were mandated by the Tripura Electricity Regulatory Commission (TERC).
He noted that whenever there is an attempt to raise charges, advertisements are issued, and suggestions are sought before making decisions. TSECL is not responsible for raising or lowering electricity bills. However, he assured that the government has discussed the matter in detail and will take appropriate steps to alleviate consumer issues.
