Trinamool Congress Councillor Sachin Singh Arrested on Corruption Charges in Kolkata

Kolkata, June 3: In a significant crackdown on corruption and illegal activities in West Bengal, Sachin Singh, a Trinamool Congress councillor of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), has been arrested by the police. Authorities have charged him with serious allegations, including extortion.

According to sources from Lalbazar, the Kolkata police headquarters, officers from the Narkeldanga police station arrived at Singh’s residence on Tuesday afternoon to make the arrest. During this time, some local residents protested outside his home, accusing the councillor of engaging in intimidation and violence against his opponents.

Police reports indicate that Singh’s name has emerged in connection with alleged electoral violence following the announcement of the 2021 West Bengal Assembly election results. He had won his first term in the KMC elections that year on a Trinamool Congress ticket.

Following his arrest, Singh is expected to be presented in the Sialdah court concerning the extortion case.

Notably, on May 23, the Thakurpukur police also arrested Sudip Polle, a Trinamool councillor from ward number 123 and chairman of borough number 16, for his involvement in an extortion case.

On the same day, Tarun Chakraborty, a Trinamool councillor from ward number 87 in the Asansol Municipal Corporation, was arrested for allegedly hoarding government relief materials at his home. Police claim that a significant portion of the government relief packages intended for the poor was recovered from his residence, and all materials were seized on Tuesday.

Investigative agencies have reported that, in addition to hoarding relief materials, Chakraborty faces serious charges related to illegal sand trading, extortion, and embezzlement of funds meant for housing assistance for the underprivileged.

Authorities have intensified their campaign against the alleged illegal and criminal activities of Trinamool Congress leaders following the formation of the BJP government in the state. Several leaders and public representatives are facing action for breaking the law and corruption allegations.

In the past month, multiple Trinamool councillors have been arrested across various regions of the state on charges of corruption, misuse of government resources, and extortion.
