Patna, August 26: A family’s joy turned into sorrow in Samastipur district, Bihar, on Tuesday night. Just days after giving birth to a daughter, a woman was allegedly shot dead by her husband following a domestic dispute. This incident occurred during the ‘Chhathi’ ceremony, which is celebrated six days after a newborn’s birth.
The tragedy unfolded in the village of Chaklalshahi, located in the Halai police station area. The family was celebrating the arrival of their daughter after having two sons. Reports indicate that a heated argument erupted between Manjula Devi and her husband, Suraj Sahni, during the festivities. The dispute escalated, leading to Manjula being allegedly shot.
Manjula sustained severe injuries and collapsed at the scene, leaving her family in shock. Her brother rushed her to Samastipur Sadar Hospital on a motorcycle, but doctors declared her dead upon arrival. Manjula’s family has accused her husband of the shooting.
Following the incident, Suraj Sahni reportedly fled, prompting police teams to search for him. The Halai police arrived at the village shortly after receiving information and began investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Officers are questioning family members and local residents to determine the cause of the argument and the sequence of events.
To gather evidence, a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team was called to the crime scene on Wednesday morning. The police are also attempting to recover the weapon used in the shooting. Authorities stated that the investigation is being conducted from all angles.
Based on a written complaint from the deceased woman’s brother, the district police have registered an FIR against her husband, Suraj Sahni, under relevant murder charges. The police have recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem at Samastipur Sadar Hospital.
