Mumbai, August 14: A devastating incident occurred on Thursday in the THDC railway tunnel under construction in Mayapur, Pipalkoti, located in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand. Approximately 20 workers were trapped inside the tunnel due to a sudden surge of water and debris. Tragically, seven workers lost their lives, while 13 others were safely rescued and admitted to the district hospital in Gopeshwar.
In interviews conducted on Friday, the injured workers recounted their harrowing experiences. One worker, Sunil Diwan, shared, “Everything happened so suddenly that we didn’t even have a chance to escape. The pressure from the strong winds and water swept us away. There was already water present, and then the raw soil, stones, and water came rushing in, leaving us no time to react.”
Another injured worker added, “The force of the wind and water completely threw us out. When the water came rushing in, about 15 to 20 people were swept away.”
A worker mentioned that at the time of the accident, everyone was working in different areas. The sudden influx of water and debris caused chaos, and no one understood what was happening.
Dr. Ayush from Gopeshwar District Hospital provided an update on the situation, stating, “So far, a total of 19 individuals have been brought to us from THDC. Seven have been declared dead, while 13 are currently in our care and their condition is relatively stable. We have admitted 10 of them, with one boy in a more serious condition. All are receiving treatment under expert supervision.”
Following the news of the Chamoli tunnel accident, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited the site to assess the situation. He also inquired about the well-being of the injured workers.
