Chamoli, August 14: Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited the site of the THDC tunnel accident in Mayapur (Pipalkoti) on Friday. This inspection followed an incident where debris and water filled the under-construction tunnel. The Chief Minister assessed the ongoing rescue operations and gathered essential information from officials and rescue teams present at the site.
He entered the tunnel to evaluate the rescue and relief efforts, obtaining crucial updates from the teams engaged in the operation. The TRT tunnel of the THDC Vishnugad-Pipalkoti hydroelectric project spans approximately 3 kilometers, with about 1.5 kilometers affected by subsidence, leading to the influx of debris and water.
The Chief Minister instructed officials to prioritize the rescue operation, effectively utilizing all available resources and technical expertise. He emphasized the importance of maintaining coordination among the teams involved, including the NDRF, SDRF, ITBP, and police, to ensure the safe extraction of the remaining three individuals trapped in the tunnel.
District Magistrate Gaurav Kumar briefed the Chief Minister on the incident, detailing the rescue efforts undertaken so far. He reported that out of 22 individuals trapped in the tunnel, 19 have been rescued, while the search for the remaining three continues. Tragically, seven fatalities have been confirmed. The rescued individuals have been transported to the district hospital in Gopeshwar, where a team of health professionals is monitoring their treatment and recovery.
The Chief Minister directed officials to ensure that there are no shortcomings in the treatment of the injured, assistance to their families, and necessary arrangements at the accident site. He stressed the need for continuous coordination with the rescue teams to conduct the operation with utmost seriousness and caution.
Attendees during the inspection included Cabinet Minister Bharat Chaudhary, Tharali MLA Bhupal Ram Tamta, District Panchayat President Daulat Singh Bisht, State Minister Harak Singh, former Cabinet Minister Rajendra Bhandari, Municipal Council President Aarti Navani, Councillor Raja Joshi, Disaster Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman, Garhwal Commissioner Anand Swaroop, IG Garhwal Rajiv Swaroop, District Magistrate Gaurav Kumar, Superintendent of Police Surjeet Singh Pawar, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Rajkumar Pandey, and other representatives and officials.
