Srinagar, October 8 (Daily Kiran) : A tragic road accident occurred on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway late Thursday night, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuring seven others. Authorities reported that the incident took place when a vehicle carrying nine passengers lost control while heading towards Chuntan, veering off the road and plunging down the slope.
The deceased have been identified as the driver, Vijay Singh, and a 26-year-old passenger named Sunil Singh. Among the injured, one person has been referred to Jammu for treatment, while the remaining six were taken to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Anantnag.
According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and local traffic officials, road accidents in Jammu and Kashmir frequently stem from human error, challenging terrain, and vehicle-related issues. Key contributing factors include excessive speeding, reckless driving, and sudden maneuvers by drivers.
Dangerous overtaking, particularly on narrow mountain roads, often leads to head-on collisions or vehicles falling into ravines. The infrequent use of seat belts and helmets significantly increases the severity of injuries, with many fatalities resulting from head trauma.
Overloading in passenger buses, public transport, and commercial vehicles adversely affects control and stability, especially on steep inclines. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs impairs a driver’s reaction time and decision-making abilities.
Additionally, the rugged terrain and poor road infrastructure, including sharp turns and landslides, exacerbate driver errors. Adverse weather conditions such as rain, snowfall, dense fog, and black ice can further limit visibility and reduce braking effectiveness.
