Tragic Explosion in Odisha Claims Lives of Father and Son, Injures Three

Jagatsinghpur, October 8 (Daily Kiran) : A tragic incident unfolded in Jagatsinghpur district, Odisha, on Thursday when a powerful explosion, reportedly involving firecrackers, led to the deaths of two family members. The victims were identified as 55-year-old Manohar Swain and his 22-year-old son, Soumya Sahil Swain, both residents of Mahilo village in the Tirtole area.

The explosion also left three others injured, including Manohar’s wife and sister-in-law, who sustained minor injuries. A local high school mathematics teacher, Rahul Raj Mohant, from Mayurbhanj district, was critically injured in the blast. He had been invited to the Swain family’s home for lunch that day and is currently receiving treatment at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.

According to police reports, the explosion occurred around 1 PM. The blast was so intense that it nearly destroyed the room where it happened, causing significant damage to the ceiling and walls.

Ajay Kumar Das, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Tirtole, stated that the deceased father and son operated a business providing sound and lighting systems for religious and social events in the area. Locals mentioned that they occasionally sold firecrackers during festivals, including Diwali and weddings, and had recently stocked up on them in anticipation of upcoming celebrations.

The SDPO noted that the room where the explosion took place contained three gas cylinders, firecrackers, a generator, and lighting equipment. Authorities suspect that the explosion may have been triggered by one of the gas cylinders or the firecrackers. An investigation has been launched, with the fire department and a scientific team from the district police examining the site to determine the exact cause of the explosion.
