Beijing, May 31: A tragic incident occurred in Yunnan province, China, early Sunday morning when a mine collapsed during illegal mining activities, resulting in the deaths of five individuals and leaving one person injured.
According to local authorities, the accident took place around 4:30 AM in Baibu village, located in Nagu town of Huize County. Following the incident, local administration promptly initiated a rescue operation.
As reported by the Xinhua news agency, teams from the disaster management, police, fire department, health, and natural resources sectors of Qujing city and Huize County collaborated in the rescue efforts. The rescue teams successfully extracted all six individuals trapped under the debris and transported them to the hospital.
Unfortunately, five of the victims succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment at the hospital. The condition of the sole survivor is currently stable and not life-threatening.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the causes of the incident.
It is noteworthy that earlier this month, a significant mining accident occurred in Shanxi province, leading to the deaths of 82 people. On May 22, a gas explosion took place in the Liushenxu coal mine in Kinyuan County, where over 200 workers were present at the time. A total of 123 individuals were hospitalized, with two in critical condition and two others in extremely serious condition, while the rest sustained minor injuries.
The investigation team stated that accountability would be established for the local administration, regulatory agencies, and the involved company, with strict actions to be taken in accordance with the law.
Fatal accidents in China’s coal mining industry have long been a cause for concern. Despite the implementation of stricter safety standards, such incidents continue to occur periodically.
Earlier this year, another coal mine accident in Shanxi province trapped three workers when a section of the tunnel collapsed. At that time, eight workers were engaged in repair work, and five managed to escape safely.
