Mumbai, August 2: A tragic landslide in Shivamogga district of Karnataka has resulted in the deaths of three family members, including a three-year-old child, due to continuous heavy rainfall. The incident occurred early Sunday morning.
Reports indicate that the landslide struck a temporary shelter in Indira Nagar, Tirthahalli, around 2:30 AM. The relentless downpour in the Malnad region caused a portion of a hill to collapse, burying the shelter under a significant amount of mud and rocks while the family members were asleep after returning from work.
The deceased have been identified as Mallikarjun (30), Nagaveni (27), and their three-year-old son, Santosh. The family had come from Kakkaragol village in Gangavati taluk of Koppal district for work.
Additionally, a worker named Hanumanth, who was trapped in the debris, was rescued by firefighters and emergency service personnel. He has been admitted to Jayachamarajendra Hospital in Tirthahalli, where he is receiving medical treatment.
Authorities have confirmed that he is being provided with appropriate medical care. Some residents of a nearby shelter also sustained injuries and have been hospitalized.
Following the incident, police and emergency service teams launched a rescue operation. After several hours of effort, the bodies of the three victims were recovered from the debris.
The incident took place within the jurisdiction of the Tirthahalli police station. Officials are assessing the impact of the ongoing rainfall and have urged residents in landslide-prone areas to remain vigilant.
It is noteworthy that severe landslides and disruptions to train services have occurred in the Western Ghats region due to the heavy monsoon rains. Landslides in Mangaluru and surrounding areas have resulted in loss of life and traffic disruptions.
Train services between Mangaluru and Yeshvantpur were canceled on Sunday following a landslide on the railway tracks between Yedakumari and Srivagilu stations. A special train carrying relief materials has reached the affected site.
Earlier, on July 1, a landslide caused by heavy rainfall in the Kankanadi Nagori area of Mangaluru resulted in the collapse of a house, claiming the lives of three individuals, including a woman and two teenage girls. A man and two teenage girls were rescued by local residents and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel and taken to the hospital for treatment.
