New Delhi, August 25: The search for 15-year-old Mithun, an eighth-grade student who went missing after falling into an open drain in Jasola village, South East Delhi, has ended in tragedy. His body was discovered on Tuesday, marking a sorrowful conclusion to a four-day search operation.
Mithun fell into the drain while attempting to fly a kite near his home on Saturday morning. He was reported missing around 11 AM, prompting fears from his family that he had been swept away in the water.
Originally from Uttar Pradesh, Mithun’s family resides in the area and works as daily wage laborers.
A large-scale search operation was initiated immediately after the incident, involving multiple agencies. The Delhi Fire Service, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and other rescue teams conducted extensive searches in the drain and surrounding areas to locate the boy.
Despite continuous efforts, Mithun remained missing for several days. Ultimately, his body was found on Tuesday and has been sent for post-mortem examination.
The incident sparked outrage on social media after a video went viral showing Mithun’s father entering the drain with a stick, searching for his son during the rescue operation.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed deep sorrow and strong anger over the incident. She directed the Chief Secretary to provide information about the jurisdiction and responsibilities regarding the drain within an hour and called for action against any officials found negligent.
Following the incident, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) suspended a junior engineer from the South East (Central) zone for alleged negligence. The municipal body stated that disciplinary action has been initiated against the officer amid rising concerns about the safety and maintenance of the open and unprotected drain where the teenager reportedly fell.
