Delhi Government to Monitor Onion Hoarding and Sugar Stocking Limits

New Delhi, August 25: A review meeting on the availability and pricing of onions and sugar was held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. During the meeting, the CM stated that hoarding of onions will be closely monitored, and actions will be taken against those exceeding the prescribed limits for sugar storage.
The meeting revealed that there is currently no shortage of onions or sugar in the capital. However, if prices continue to rise, the Delhi government will ensure that residents do not bear an additional burden. In such cases, the government plans to procure onions and sugar from the central government agency Nafed and arrange for their availability at various locations in the capital. These items will be sold at the same price at which they are purchased from Nafed, while the Delhi government will cover transportation and other related expenses.
Food and Supply Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa and senior officials from the department were present at the meeting. Considering the possibility of further price increases for onions and sugar, the Chief Minister directed the department to prepare a comprehensive action plan. This plan should include arrangements to provide onions at affordable rates through camps across Delhi.
CM Rekha Gupta also instructed officials to initiate the process of purchasing onions from Nafed. The central government has also taken steps to ensure the supply of onions to states and regions facing shortages. The department has been tasked with monitoring the supply of onions to Delhi, ensuring it reaches the market properly, preventing hoarding, and taking necessary actions when required.
Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa emphasized that the government’s aim is to ensure that if onion prices rise further, the burden does not fall on the residents of Delhi. Onions will be sold at the same price at which Nafed supplies them. The Delhi government will bear transportation and other related costs, ensuring that the public does not face any additional financial strain.
The minister added that the central government has established quantity-related rules to curb sugar hoarding. The Delhi government will also act under these regulations, and if any location is found to have stockpiled sugar beyond the set limits, actions will be taken against those responsible. The department has also been instructed to explore how sugar can be made available and supplied to the public at affordable rates, for which a detailed plan has been requested.
