New Delhi, August 25: The tragic death of a student at IIT Delhi has raised serious concerns about mental pressure and safety among students at the country’s prestigious educational institutions. Arvind Kejriwal, the national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and demanded a fair and timely investigation. He emphasized that all student concerns must be taken seriously and that timely support should be provided to those facing difficult circumstances.
Kejriwal mourned the loss of student Rishikesh, stating that he is profoundly saddened by this event. He underscored the need for an impartial and prompt investigation, insisting that all student-related concerns and circumstances should be thoroughly examined. He claimed that over 65 IIT students have committed suicide in the past five years.
He described this statistic as alarming, asserting that the mental and academic pressures faced by students in the country’s top technical institutions cannot be overlooked. According to him, there is a pressing need for serious introspection regarding this situation. He noted that the academic excellence of institutions like IIT is a source of pride for the entire nation, having brought recognition to India in education, research, and technology on a global scale.
Kejriwal stated that success should not be measured solely by rankings, good grades, and better placements. The mental and emotional well-being of students is equally important. He emphasized that every student should have an environment where they can discuss their problems and concerns without fear. Students must feel assured that someone is available to listen to them during tough times and that immediate assistance can be provided when needed.
He highlighted the necessity of developing better support systems for students in educational institutions. He urged that, instead of focusing solely on academic and career outcomes, institutions must also understand students’ personal issues, mental pressures, and emotional needs at an institutional level.
Kejriwal called for self-reflection regarding the current system and the need to address any shortcomings. Students should not be left alone in situations where they struggle with their problems without a safe avenue for seeking help. He stated that the future of the country’s students is extremely important and they cannot be let down. Regarding the IIT Delhi student’s death, he expressed hope for a fair investigation that would bring all related aspects to light.
