Khandwa, April 4: A tragic incident occurred in the Three Pulia area of Khandwa district, Madhya Pradesh, when a dilapidated railway building collapsed during scrap removal operations. One railway worker died on the spot, while another was seriously injured.
The accident took place as a team of railway employees was working to extract scrap from the crumbling structure. Suddenly, a large section of the building fell, trapping the workers under the debris.
Local residents and fellow workers immediately rushed to assist. Using a JCB machine, they cleared the rubble to rescue the trapped employees. Although Master Craftsman Shashikant was pulled out, he had already succumbed to his injuries.
The second worker, Virendra, sustained severe injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Senior police officials and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) arrived at the scene shortly after the incident was reported. The Khandwa police have registered a case and initiated a detailed investigation into the causes of the accident.
The police station in charge stated that the investigation will determine whether safety protocols were followed prior to the scrap removal. He remarked, “The building was clearly in a dilapidated state, raising questions about why adequate precautions were not taken.”
A senior railway official, speaking on condition of anonymity, noted that old railway buildings often pose hidden risks. He stated, “We will conduct a structural safety audit of similar old buildings across the division. Currently, our priority is to ensure the injured worker receives proper treatment and to support the family of the deceased.”
The railway department and district administration have formed a team to investigate the actual causes of the collapse. Officials assured that strict action would be taken if negligence is found.
